Palais des Papes, Avignon

Palais des Papes or Popes’ Palace in Avignon is the largest gothic palace in all of Europe. It’s construction started in 1335 and took around 20 years to complete. Avignon was home to 9 popes until the papal capital was moved back to Rome in 1377.

The day I arrived in Avignon, I decided to visit the Palais des Papes. I bought tickets at the Tourist Office which meant I skipped the line at the Palais and went straight inside past the long queues. The Palais is simply stunning from the outside & inside. It was so surreal to think that this Palais was built in the early 1300’s and was home to the Popes.

I spend a good few hours looking through all the halls, chambers, towers, cloisters & courtyard. There were even secret safes underground with thick stone walls & flooring. The panoramic view from the top of the tower is worth climbing the stairs for. It is my new favourite historical building. If you travel to France, Avignon is a must see city!
