On my second day in Provence, I booked a tour to see a few of the villages in the area. First up was Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a beautiful medieval village situated about 30 km from Avignon. In this tiny riverside village, you’ll see the birth of a river. A short distance from the main square is a large basin in the rock, constantly fed by the underground sources, from which flows the river Sorgue. This source is the most powerful in France. The water flowing through the town is clear and it appears to be emerald green.
In the distance, on top of a mountain, you can also see the ruins of the castle of archbishops of Cavaillon, built in XIV century. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a picturesque little village to walk around and explore. Shame we didn’t spend a lot of time there but it gave me a good idea of how gorgeous Provence truly is.
